The proximal femur consists of the proximal femoral shaft, trochanter minor/major, femoral neck and the femoral head. The hip joint is a ball-socket joint consisting of a ball (= femoral head) and a socket (= acetabulum). The acetabulum is formed by three jointed osseous structures; os ilium, os ischii and the os pubis (fig. 1).
